15. Light

Petra opened her eyes. She was standing, surrounded by faces she didn’t recognize. Angelic beings with impossible physiques stood in a semicircle around her, talking amongst themselves and wearing grave expressions.

One of the number, an older woman with long white hair that shimmered in the brilliant sunlight approached Petra, placing a hand on her arm. She was stunningly beautiful, wearing a flowing white and gold dress, her eyes shining with golden light.

Petra couldn’t feel the woman’s touch, nor could she sense the physical presence of her body. It was as though she were inside someone else’s skin, able to see and hear, but not actually experience what they were feeling.

She realized the body was clamped in place, held against something solid with bands of brilliant light that seemed to have physical form. Petra tried to speak and move the body she was inhabiting, but she couldn’t influence it in any way.

“Dear heart,” the white-haired woman said, sadness in her eyes. “I wish it were not thus, but you have been chosen from among all our people to end this war and bring the light once more into ascendance.”

One again Petra tried to speak and once more she could not do anything other than observe.

“Please understand, dear heart, that this was not of my choosing, nor was it your father’s wish. The fates have made this choice and we of the Lumen Council were bound to ratify it, despite the pain it causes us.”

Words flowed from Petra’s borrowed lips, soft and unintelligible. The white-haired woman nodded, tears falling down her cheeks.

“I too wish it were not thus,” she said. “Be well, daughter. If the Light will it, we will see each other again, though perhaps not in this incarnation.”

She leaned forward and Petra felt the slightest touch of a kiss on her cheek. The white-haired woman drew back, smiling bitterly as she turned and walked away.

The angelic figures gathered around stopped their chatter and turned to face Petra. They each wore solemn expressions, some bowing their heads, others staring with stalwart gazes toward her. She felt both intimately connected to the scene on some deep level, yet still distant from it.

Her eyes drifted to the towering buildings in the distance, a city skyline that looked to have been plucked from some utopian sci-fi story. Sharp towers cut into the deep blue sky, their metallic edges glinting like keen blades as the sun shone from above. Amid the sharp, modern buildings, older structures rose, yet somehow there was complete cohesion between old and new.

From her position standing above the crowd, Petra could see parklands stretching out below, perfectly manicured and dotted here and there with water features and clusters of trees laden with fresh fruit. In the distance islands floated among the clouds, some furnished with sandstone buildings, others boasting rocky outcroppings or mountainous peaks.

A broad-shouldered man with similarly white hair and a long beard approached. He wore gold armor and bore a sheathed sword at his waist. The man smiled, his startling golden eyes locked on hers.
